The most difficult thing I have completed during my first year of high school was adapting to a new learning style and a new community or nicer, more supportive people. This was difficult for me because I was used to a strict learning environment where we had no hands on learning and we weren’t as close to the teachers as we are here at Animas High School. Once I got to know the community and started to get along with people and not be on my own, I sort of clicked with the system, like when I was sitting alone in class while everyone else was getting a partner for a duo project, my now best friend came along and chose to be my partner for the assignment, which made me feel like I belonged at Animas. Animas High School has helped me learn quicker and more valuable information for when I start to be on my own, I am glad I had friends recommend Animas to me!
The most important change I had made as a 9th grade learner was my attitude towards learning and school, since I never liked school nor learning at all before. In Middle School, I hated school and refused to learn. I had very selective hearing and didn’t show up to class much at all. Since I’ve moved to Animas High School, I have had fun learning and having a hands on experience that I actually want to learn now, like when we were working on our math portfolios in Math 1, because I really wanted to improve my performance in Mathematics, and I also do not have super selective hearing any longer. My mood towards school has changed for the better since I started attending Animas High School and it has made me much more successful than I would have originally been if I did not attend such a proud and interactive High School. I am most proud of my Teacher Creature Project from Digital Arts this year. *seen below essay*
I am most proud of my Teacher Creature project because I put a lot of time, effort, and work into it. I feel like I did a great job on it, It’s clean and I like the setting I chose to photoshop my pictures into because I am attracted to volcanoes and the ocean, and it looks quite exquisite together. What made me feel even better about this work is that Roxy, the amazing Digital Arts teacher, used it as her example for her (example student) DP. I do feel very proud of this project. I feel like I could expand my horizons with photoshop, allowing me to be able to express myself and my ideas. I find myself more intrigued with photoshop than I do any other art form.
A habit of heart and mind I have used to make myself more successful is advocacy. I was never good at advocating for myself because I never liked school enough to want to participate. I never knew how much advocacy could have helped my grades in any class until I attempted it this year. Advocacy has made me more successful in school by allowing me to reach out to the teachers for help when I need it, which would have been useful in Middle School on multiple projects, but mainly science projects because I rarely understood much about them. It made me feel overwhelmed by work. When I advocated at Animas, like when I did so in math with my portfolios because I didn’t have all of the work, the teacher and I worked together to get it done, which made me happy and relieved because I finished in time. I plan to use advocacy whenever I feel overwhelmed or confused about work in the future. Advocacy has helped me greatly throughout 9th grade, but I could improve on it much more so I can obtain better grades than I currently have!
