What is LINK?
Link is a 3-week internship experience for us Juniors to get out into the world and figure out what exactly we might be interest in in the future.
Main Street Tech Information
Main Street Tech is a one-man business. The owner is named James Cudworth. He works on audio mechanic devices, such as radio. One example of his works is the intercoms for NASCAR. In order for the racers to contact their crew pit, you need radio devices, and that's what James creates.

LINK Project
Reflection on LINK
Coming into LINK, the main skills and abilities that have helped me is optimism. We had so many things we could possibly do, and I wanted to explore all of them, so being open minded to start something new such as auto mechanics, helped extremely. I didn’t go into LINK expecting to work on my car, I expected to work with speaker and audio systems. My mentor, James Cudworth, wanted to make sure I got around safely, so he took a look at my car and noted how raggety it was, so we decided to work on it for the rest of LINK. The switch of topics was quite easy as I took an interest in auto mechanics very quickly.
Each skill taken from this experience is extremely important to me. Collaboration was quite a large part of this experience. I typically try to do projects by myself, and I never worked well with another person to help. Throughout the internship, working with my mentor was really beneficial, and it adjusted me to better work with others. Since I had James to instruct me, doing the hands-on work was much easier and more of a learning experience than just watching him do it himself. Doing this together was so much fun as well!
I grew greatly during this experience, I feel more confident in myself, and safer in the long run because I won’t be stuck on the side of the road not knowing what to do. Having done everything myself, I'm more proud of my accomplishments than I would have been had I just sat and watched or if I’d just taken the car to a mechanic to do the work. If I blew a tire, for example, I now know where my spare donut tire is, and the tools I need in order to replace it are also in the car, so instead of calling roadside insurance to tow my car and having to pay them, I can just do it myself at no extra cost.
Auto car mechanics are in high demand these days, and a school based on such a topic is expensive and needs specific skills. With this experience, I have a larger open window into these kinds of schools if the opportunity arises. I’d have an easier time being accepted into more mechanical based universities or colleges. If I decided not to go into another school system, I would have plenty of knowledge to keep it as a hobby, working on people’s cars in the meantime could help me gain lots more experience and profit.
This internship has made me second guess college. James (my mentor) didn’t go to college, instead he made his own business, and is still in that business and thriving. I’m wondering if college is even necessary anymore in order to make a sustainable income in the future.
